Still learning about Network security and web page development. Currently Learning PHP and MySQL. Other than that, I am pretty much an HTML, JScript amatuer web designer. On my web site, I would like to be able to record and log the IP address of people who visit my site. Is this accomplished through code on a page, or by adding software to the server? And While I have you here reading, what programming is best for log in abilities (creating user names and passwords)? As I said, still learning, so any help is appreciated. Any references to tutorial sites, or books is also appreciated. I would like to learn as much as possible about web development, network security, and intrusion detection and prevention.

I want to learn network programming, scripting, web development using scripting languages. There are so many books in the market and every one of them claims to be the best. So I need first hand informations and tips to choose the correct book both for beginner’s and advanced level users.

Just a security question here, Is it possible for people to download your uncompiled PHP scripts and view the code. I only ask because I recently did a web development project whre I stored the password to an admin page inside of the PHP script. Is this safe, if not, how would I go about doing this short of saving it in a database.

Hi, I am looking to do some local development of php on Windows XP, and would like (educated) opinions on what the best Apache/PHP/Mysql package is. Some examples of these packages are:

http://easyphp.org/

http://www.appservnetwork.com/

There may be many I am missing. This is just a quick summary of the ones I found after doing a Yahoo search.

I am looking for more than just a link. I want to hear from someone who has either tried multiple packages or has in depth knowledge about multiple packages. What are the pros and cons of each one? What is your personal preference? Some considerations are:
- How often is the package updated?
- installation ease and reliability
- being able to easily switch versions of PHP 4/5
- extra/useful packages included
