Apache, Tomcat, PHP, MySQL, JSP, Linux, Windows… Choices???

Hi,

I’m developing a shopping-cart style online E-commerce website, similar to amazon where users select their items to a cart and checkout paying by supplying their card details.

However before i start implementing my code i’d like to ask for some advice on making the right decisions.

Which is the better OS to use (Linux, Windows?) with which server? i.e. Apache, Tomcat, IIS, etc.. Why?

SSL encryption is one option for security, any alternatives to consider other than SSL?

Which language would be the best to implement this with, probably in conjunction with a MySQL database, would it be better to use PHP, JSP, ASP… with reasons?

I know there are CMS packages i could download and configure, but i’d like to learn something by coding it.

The main factors to take into consideration when deciding the options are.. Security, Performance and Reliability. Other advantages/disadvantages for each choice will be great.

Many thanks in advance, all your answers will be much appreciated

where to find about resell the reseller webhosting account?

I need the the details of the provider. The server should be US based, LINUX (specially) where I can resell the reseller accounts to my clients by giving them WHM/cpanel. The price should be very competitive and affordable. I am from Nepal and it would be better if I don’t need to do the business with Credit Card as the facility is not available in Nepal (International CC). The server should have better datatransfer/ bandwidth, audio video streaming facility, POP email accounts, PHP,MySql, CGI-bin etc…

How can I bind to specific IP Address for outbound PHP/MySQL connection (linux)?

Have multiple IP addresses, using aliases, for instance:

eth0 192.168.0.1
eth0:0 192.168.0.101
eth0:1 192.168.0.102 <- would like to use
eth0:2 192.168.0.103

Would like to bind the outbound ip address, there is no mysql server on this box. For security purposes, I must connect to the remote server using a specific unchangeable ip address. Nor can I change the primary IP address on this box.

debian box, with root access.

My linux machine with PHP and libGD won’t scale some JPEG pictures correctly? Why?

I’m running Fedora Core and have been updating very consistently. I’m kinda a linux newbie, so I’m not sure how to check versions of everything.
The page in question is at http://www.tinabelmont.com/gallery.php
I think I’ve mostly fixed it. PHP was out of memory, and some of the JPEGs didn’t have the right terminating value. Thanks for trying!

Is it worth the trouble switching to a Linux platform for Web dev?

I’m still in Windows XP using Corel Draw, Photoshop, ASP, VBScript… not sure if its worth the switch just yet.

I mainly use ASP and VBScript for serverside stuff. I refuse to learn .NET, but its time to upgrade my skillset. Maybe PHP, mySQL, Ajax, Gimp, Sodipodi and the like on a Linux box. Any thoughts?

Any comments on Gimp for photo editing and Sodipodi for vector graphics?
