Apache, Tomcat, PHP, MySQL, JSP, Linux, Windows… Choices???
Hi,
I’m developing a shopping-cart style online E-commerce website, similar to amazon where users select their items to a cart and checkout paying by supplying their card details.
However before i start implementing my code i’d like to ask for some advice on making the right decisions.
Which is the better OS to use (Linux, Windows?) with which server? i.e. Apache, Tomcat, IIS, etc.. Why?
SSL encryption is one option for security, any alternatives to consider other than SSL?
Which language would be the best to implement this with, probably in conjunction with a MySQL database, would it be better to use PHP, JSP, ASP… with reasons?
I know there are CMS packages i could download and configure, but i’d like to learn something by coding it.
The main factors to take into consideration when deciding the options are.. Security, Performance and Reliability. Other advantages/disadvantages for each choice will be great.
Many thanks in advance, all your answers will be much appreciated
Is it worth the trouble switching to a Linux platform for Web dev?
I’m still in Windows XP using Corel Draw, Photoshop, ASP, VBScript… not sure if its worth the switch just yet.
I mainly use ASP and VBScript for serverside stuff. I refuse to learn .NET, but its time to upgrade my skillset. Maybe PHP, mySQL, Ajax, Gimp, Sodipodi and the like on a Linux box. Any thoughts?
Any comments on Gimp for photo editing and Sodipodi for vector graphics?
What is the best Apache/PHP/Mysql package for Windows XP?
Hi, I am looking to do some local development of php on Windows XP, and would like (educated) opinions on what the best Apache/PHP/Mysql package is. Some examples of these packages are:
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/
http://easyphp.org/
http://www.appservnetwork.com/
There may be many I am missing. This is just a quick summary of the ones I found after doing a Yahoo search.
I am looking for more than just a link. I want to hear from someone who has either tried multiple packages or has in depth knowledge about multiple packages. What are the pros and cons of each one? What is your personal preference? Some considerations are:
- How often is the package updated?
- installation ease and reliability
- being able to easily switch versions of PHP 4/5
- extra/useful packages included
Thank you in advance!
